British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership (BC level 2)

The British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike leader is the UK's number 1 Mountain Bike Leadership award.

At the end of the BC level 2 leader training you will reflect on what has been covered on the course and with your tutor be given an action plan, this will help you polish up on what is needed to successfully pass an assessment and more importantly become a quality British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leader. There is a minimum time of 6 weeks between training and assessment and a maximum time of 18 months.

Courses are run from our British Cycling approved training center located near Llanrwst in the Snowdonia National Park (North Wales).

Before your BC level 2 training you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have mountain biking experience in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.
  • Be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features encountered at this level of award (as a general guide this is comparable to red graded purpose built trails).
  • Have an appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding in the BC level 2 leading environment (see previous bullet point)
  • Hold a current two-day outdoor First Aid certificate (this can be handed in at a later date, but must be submitted before assessment)
  • In preparation for the Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award you should log a minimum of 15 rides of at least two hours in duration each. Out of these, at least four rides should be of four hours or more in duration. All rides should be completed within the last 12 months and represent a variety of terrain and weather conditions with at least half of them taking place on natural trails as opposed to purpose built trail centre routes. * To benefit from British Cycling’s professional indemnity insurance you need to have undergone training in safeguarding and protecting children as part of your qualification and to make it easier for you, the relevant training is incorporated into the course. The programme we have chosen to use has been written by the NSPCC and provides an excellent introduction to safeguarding children and young people. It is also an excellent refresher if you have undergone training previously and ensures that everyone receives the same clear, consistent messages regardless of their working arrangements or locations.

** If you aren’t already a British Cycling member you will also receive Ride Membership (valid for one year), which will provide you with worldwide professional indemnity insurance of up to £10m (except USA and Canada) and other useful benefits. For existing members the cost of Ride Membership (£32) is deducted from the £100 registration cost.


After the British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leader training course....

Once you have successfully completed the BC level 2 training course, British Cycling will send you a provisional leading license enabling you to assist with fully qualified BC L2 Leaders (as long as all the course prerequisites have been met)


Assessment 1 day £90

The practical assessment and written assignment for the BC level 2 will follow after a consolidation period of approximately six weeks allowing sufficient time for you to hone all those new skills and knowledge you have obtained during training. The practical assessment consists of an all-day mountain bike journey during which each candidate will be assigned to lead a section of the assessment route. You will be expected to deliver a flowing journey whilst demonstrating good leadership and navigational skills.

The written assessment is an open book home study task and comprises of a range of short answer questions. This task is based on the information included in the British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Handbook and other resources provided on the course.

Once you have passed your assessment, British Cycling will add your details to a database of leaders which will help promote you as a BC level 2 leader.


 

What do we consider to be a quality ride in preparation for training and assessment as a Mountain Bike Leader?

• Involvement in planning and leadership.
• Adverse conditions may be encountered and map based navigation skills required.
• Experience of terrain and weather comparable to UK conditions.
• Attention is paid to safety, increasing knowledge and practising skills.
• The ride will include sections of technical difficulty which reflect the Level 2 or 3* environment (*as appropriate).
• Journeys are likely to contain a proportion of ascent and descent throughout.
